EUTR

The EU Timber Regulation was in force across the UK from 3 March 2013. It prohibits placing illegally harvested timber, or products derived from it, on the market. It covers a broad range of timber products, including the custom products made in the Batty workshop. Buyers and sellers of timber on the EU market needed controls in place.

The original page pointed readers to the Central Point of Expertise on Timber at www.cpet.org.uk for the list of products covered. Enforcement in the UK was by the National Measurement Office, with penalties for non-compliance.

How the company said it would help

For timber traded inside the EU, the page set out three traceability duties: identify the operators or traders who supplied the timber, identify the traders it was supplied to where that applies, and keep that information for at least five years and provide it to the competent authority if asked.

The page also said EUTR compliance shows legality and does not by itself prove the timber is sustainable. Batty’s FSC Chain of Custody certification was described as the further check for certified timber in their possession.
